The word “Medical Transcription” is closely related to the healthcare industry. Healthcare industry is growing rapidly and various healthcare facilities are available these days. Since medical transcription profession is an integral part of healthcare team, job opportunities for MTs are also expected to grow at a much faster rate.

In the early 1900s, medical stenographers performed the transcription job for physicians. Because the technology we have today was not available, medical stenographer frequently had to follow physicians during rounds, frantically trying to hear and record every word for medical record documentation. Today, with modern technology, the tasks of medical transcriptionists become easier.

Medical transcriptionists use a variety of transcription software programs and word processing equipment. Voice/speech recognition software is a rapidly evolving technology. By using this software, the doctor or other healthcare provider dictates into a computer system and the dictation software transcribes the dictation directly onto the computer screen.

They use transcriber, earphone, and foot pedal. Transcriber is the device that makes it possible to transform voice recordings into transcript or printed documents. Earphone allows them to hear dictation. The foot pedal helps to keep their hands free for keyboarding.

Medical transcription is a highly specialized job. It is the medical transcriptionist who is a language expert and specialist and who knows and applies proper formatting, correct grammar usage, punctuation, and capitalization. Medical transcriptionist must have the strong knowledge of MS Word and word processing, MS Excel and also medical terminology and pharmacology. Besides transcribing recorded or live dictation, medical transcriptionist may also have the job skills such as note-taking, medical billing, customer service, scheduling of appointments and procedures and answering multi-line phones for a medical facility.
